In 2020, amidst the isolation and uncertainty of the pandemic, Craig and Patricia Neal recognized a need within their community for connection and neighborhood food sufficiency. When the Neighborhood Sponsored Garden (NSG) was just a twinkle in our collective eyes, friend Nina Utne understood the vision and offered support for the project aligning with the goal of fostering a sense of community and providing access to fresh, locally grown food.

We are honored to share Nina's words nearly 6 years later:
"The garden is such an expression of your essence. It represents experience, wisdom, passion, service, beauty, and connection—feeding your community on so many levels and creating a model of what is possible. I'm grateful for our long friendship. ❤️❤️❤️"

What began as a humble initiative with only four families has blossomed into a thriving neighborhood network that now encompasses 13 families and nourishes nearly 50 people. The NSG operates as a hybrid model, combining the communal aspects of a neighborhood garden with the shared harvest concept of a community-supported agriculture (CSA) program. Members contribute to the garden's upkeep and, in return, receive a bounty of fresh vegetables, vibrant flowers, and opportunities for social interaction.

The NSG serves as a powerful demonstration of the potential for neighborhoods to cultivate their own food and promote healthier, more sustainable lifestyles. Members actively participate in all aspects of the garden's operation, from preparing the soil and planting seeds to weeding, watering, and harvesting. The garden has become a hub for community engagement, where members can connect with nature, learn new skills, and forge lasting friendships.

Beyond the tangible benefits of fresh produce and a greener environment, the NSG has fostered a renewed sense of community and belonging among its members. The shared experience of working together to nurture the garden and share in its bounty has created a strong bond among participants, transforming the garden into a vibrant social space where neighbors can gather, relax, and celebrate the joys of collective effort and homegrown nourishment.
